The Honourable Mick de Brenni

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni has congratulated Brisbane Lions unbeaten AFLW team after their first home game.

Speaking at the opening of the newly completed South Pine Sports Complex in Brendale, Mr de Brenni said the Australian Rules Football Womens (AFLW) competition has exceeded expectations.

“I think some people have been a bit surprised at how popular the competition has been so far,” Mr de Brenni said.

“But it’s no surprise to Queenslanders – this state is a powerhouse for football, and given the quality and the dedication of women’s AFL a top tier competition like this is well due.

“I congratulate the Lions on their performance, and I am looking forward to hosting much more quality women’s football here in Queensland – perhaps an inaugural Premiership game.”

Mr de Brenni said the Queensland Government invested $1 million in the South Pine Sports Complex upgrade, which will enhance player safety and enjoyment.

“It is great to see this multi-million dollar facility upgrade project come to fruition,” Mr de Brenni said.

“The upgrade includes the construction of a senior AFL field, field lighting to 200 lux, new roads, car parking, pathways, irrigation and landscaping as well as the construction of a multi-user clubhouse with storage, meeting and office space, kitchen and canteen, function room, ancillaries and gymnasium.

“With the local population continuing to grow, better facilities at the South Pine Sports Complex will now enable more children and young people in the Moreton Bay region to develop a passion for sport.

“The upgraded AFL field will also play host to the Brisbane Lion’s Women’s team and the North East Australian Football League.

“After seeing the complex in action today, there’s no doubt this is yet another example of the Palaszczuk Government delivering on a commitment to growing sports and recreation opportunities in Queensland, and it’s been wonderful to see our investment produce such great results for Queenslanders and local clubs.

“Thank you to the Moreton Bay Regional Council for pursuing this terrific project and to volunteers and members who have supported them in delivery.

“It’s always a pleasure to work with clubs, organisations and local councils to help improve club facilities for members and the local community.”
