LNP won’t stop me delivering Capricornia Correctional Centre expansion, jobs: Premier

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has reaffirmed her Government’s commitment to the $200 million expansion of the Capricornia Correctional Centre, despite an LNP attack on its investment.

“I was proud to announce the expansion of the Centre when I was in Rockhampton to govern from central Queensland. I was proud to announce it there, because it will create more than 100 jobs in construction, another 70 operational roles and more jobs across the region,” she said.

“Construction on the expansion will start in November.  The LNP will not get in my way. The LNP doesn’t support it.  My Government will deliver it.”

The Premier said Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls described the Capricornia Correctional Centre was “pork barrelling” Rockhampton.

“The Capricornia Correctional Centre is about providing extra capacity for the prison population.  It is also about creating jobs in regional Queensland.”

Member for Mirani Jim Pearce, whose electorate includes the site of the Capricornia Correctional Centre north of Rockhampton, said only the Palaszczuk Government and Labor was committed to the expansion and the creation of additional jobs from regional Queensland.

“Tim Nicholls cut the jobs of more than 14,000 government workers as Campbell Newman’s Treasurer and now he’s trying to cut jobs from Opposition,” he said.

“I am proud to be a member of the Palaszczuk Government that is boosting frontline services and creating jobs in regional Queensland.”
