Stay safe on the roads this New Year

Queensland drivers are being urged to do the right thing this weekend to ensure everyone has a safe and happy start to the new year.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the roads were busy over the holiday period and asked drivers to be patient and considerate, and to avoid the fatal five.

“As we count down to 2018, I urge all drivers to take care on the roads, helping ensure New Year is a happy and safe celebration for all Queenslanders,” Mr Bailey said.

“Please stick to the speed limit, ensure everyone has their seatbelts on and don’t drive distracted, tired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Crashes are preventable – there is no need for deaths or serious injuries on our roads and we can all do our bit to stop them by abiding rules and driving to conditions.

“Plan your trip and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue on long journeys.”

Mr Bailey encouraged everyone celebrating New Year’s Eve to have a Plan B before the clock struck midnight.

“We’re asking all Queenslanders enjoying a few drinks to plan an alternative way home.

“Those who drive after drinking don’t just risk failing a roadside breath test and losing their licence – they also risk their lives and the lives of others.

“Drink driving contributed to a quarter of Queensland’s road toll this year.

“If you’re drinking, don’t drive.”
