More than 90 buildings across the city are expected to draw the crowds during Brisbane Open House 2017 this weekend (October 7-8.)

Heritage Protection Minister Steven Miles said Brisbane Open House was a great opportunity to explore places which although familiar, are normally closed to the public.

“49 of the 90 buildings on the program are State heritage listed and many are not usually open to the public,” Mr Miles said.

“This weekend offers a chance to not only discover secret history, but to go behind the scenes and meet people who live or work there, and who are passionate about their place.

“Popular drawcards are likely to be the historic Parliament House and Government House, as well as the newer buildings such as the 1 William Street tower and the Translational Research Institute.

“Our churches, educational facilities, museums, fire stations, factories, art and culture, military institutions, gaols and sporting facilities will be open for tours.

“One of the heritage highlights of this year’s program is set to be Archerfield Airport, which was built in 1941.

“Its distinctive art deco terminal building served as the passenger lounge for Brisbane’s original airport.

“These days Archerfield Airport is an integral aviation hub for training, corporate aircraft, aircraft maintenance, charter aeromedical and emergency services.

“It’s a perfect example of a heritage place that helps us interpret the past, whilst conserving it for future generations.

“This weekend, I encourage visitors and Brisbane locals, to check out the program and take a tour of their favourite building.”
