The Palaszczuk Government has called on eligible South East Queensland construction companies to tender for the construction of a new social housing complex in Birkdale under the new Buy Queensland procurement strategy.

Member for Capalaba Don Brown said the strategy, whichcame into effect on 1 September 2017, was fantastic news for local businesses looking to tender for the works.

“The project will be delivered as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy, and it will support jobs for a range of trades including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, floor laying, block laying, concreting, plastering, cabinet making and painting,” Mr Brown said.

“I encourage local construction businesses with an office in Brisbane to put in a tender for this build, which involves the construction of a two-storey, 20-unit apartment block in Birkdale.

“This new complex will feature 10 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom apartments to cater for different sized households, on a site which is close to jobs, transport and community support.

“Two one-bedroom units, and four two-bedroom units will be built to the Platinum Level of Livable Housing Design Guidelines to accommodate residents with mobility impairment.

“Features of these units include hobless showers, lever taps and wider hallways and doorways.

“Consideration has also been given to ensure this complex fits in with the local environment.

“This complex will consist of low pitched roofs coloured green and grey, and landscaped areas featuring existing trees.

“An acoustic fence will also surround the complex, and units will feature double glazed windows.”

“This project will contribute to building better housing outcomes for the Brisbane community, providing more people with access to safe, secure and affordable housing,” he said.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said this project was being delivered through the Queensland Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy 2017-2027.

“Through the Housing Strategy’s Housing Construction Jobs Program an increased pipeline of work will be delivered to help support the residential construction industry in the Brisbane region and jobs for local tradies,” Mr de Brenni said.

“We’re investing $220 million to build 684 social housing dwellings in the Brisbane region over the first five years.

“This investment will see work for small, medium and large construction businesses, supporting the equivalent of 125 full time local jobs each year over the five years.”
