The Palaszczuk Government has called on eligible South East Queensland construction companies to tender for the construction of new social housing complexes in Narangba under the new Buy Queensland procurement strategy.

Member for Kallangur Shane King said the Buy Queensland policy, which came into effect on 1 September 2017, was fantastic news for local businesses looking to tender for the works.

“This project will be delivered as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy,” Mr King said.

“It will support jobs for a range of trades including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, floor laying, block laying, concreting, plastering, cabinet making and painting – and thanks to Buy Queensland, businesses who clearly demonstrate how they’re going to employ local workers and suppliers will receive preference.

"I encourage eligible local construction businesses with an office in the Moreton Bay and Brisbane regions to put in a tender for this build, which involves the construction of a 26-unit social housing complex in Narangba."

Mr King said the new complex will feature 20 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom apartments, with three built to Platinum Level of Livable Housing Design Guidelines meaning they're fully wheelchair accessible.

“The site is right in the heart of Narangba, and just across from the railway station, so it’s close to jobs, transport and community support,” Mr King said.

“This project will contribute to building better housing outcomes for the local community, providing more people with access to safe, secure and affordable housing.

“It’s good news all round.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said Buy Queensland will make a real difference to the lives of every Queenslander.

“But that is only a part of the picture. The Buy Queensland strategy will directly benefit the local community because it ensures that ‘local’ actually means local,” he said.

“We’re investing $96.6 million to build 330 social housing dwellings in the Moreton Bay region over the first five years.

“This investment will see work for small, medium and large construction businesses, supporting the equivalent of 55 full time local jobs each year over the five years.

“When the Queensland Government spends taxpayers’ money on a government contract, we want that money to stay in the local community, helping local businesses to grow and supporting employment for local workers and apprentices.

"By harnessing this investment in local business and local communities, we are providing people with the confidence to invest in new equipment and hire more staff.”
