Premier and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

I am saddened by news former Federal President and State Secretary of the Transport Workers' Union Hughie Williams has passed away.

On behalf of the Queensland Government, I offer my deepest condolences to Mr Williams' family, friends and to the thousands of Queenslanders he helped and supported.

Hughie, as he was affectionately known, was a tireless advocate for working families. He represented Australia at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Hughie often said: "Everybody who has to go to work should do a good day's work and should get a good day's pay. Everyone should treat each other with respect."

He dedicated his working life to that truth.
