Toowoomba builder wins government housing contract

Toowoomba businesses are among the first to benefit from the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.8 billion Housing Strategy, with works on a new social housing complex at Rangeville commencing soon.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said Toowoomba-based construction company Taddio Building Group has recently secured a new Queensland Government contract to build the new $3.2 million 16-unit social housing complex.

“We’re committed to making sure that local businesses have every opportunity to tender for government contracts,” Mr de Brenni said.

“This project alone will support as many as 110 jobs for a range of trades including carpentry, plumbing, floor laying, block laying, concreting, plastering, cabinet making and painting through the construction phase, so I’m very pleased to see a Toowoomba builder taking on the job.”

Mr de Brenni said the two-storey housing development will feature 16 one-bedroom units and a lift to service upper floors.

“Six apartments in the complex will be built to the Platinum Level of Livable Housing Design Guidelines to accommodate residents with mobility impairment,” Mr de Brenni said.

“These Platinum Level units will be fully wheelchair accessible, with features like wider hallways and doors to aid mobility, as well as lever taps and hobless showers.

“This new development will contribute to building better housing outcomes in Toowoomba, providing more people with access to safe, secure and affordable housing that is close to jobs, transport and community support.”

Mr de Brenni said as well as increasing social housing availability in the region, the project is part of a pipeline of work that will help support the residential construction industry in the Toowoomba region and support jobs for local tradies.

“Through the strategy’s Housing Construction Jobs Program, we’re investing $24 million to build 58 social housing dwellings in the Toowoomba region over the first five years.”

“This investment will see work for small, medium and large construction businesses, supporting the equivalent of 13 full time local jobs each year over the five years.”
