Interstate Migration to Queensland on the Up

The number of Australians making the move up in the world to Queensland to settle and live is the highest it’s been in eight years, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told State Parliament today.

“In the 12 months to March this year, 15,716 people moved to Queensland, the majority of those were from New South Wales,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“This boost to in-bound migration is the best result we’ve had since the disastrous interstate migration slump under former Premier Campbell Newman.

“It’s a resounding vote of confidence again as more and more people are continuing to find our State an attractive destination to live, work and raise their families.

“Queensland’s interstate migration numbers fell away sharply hitting a low of just 5,753 over the year to June 2014 when the Newman Government’s job and service cuts - driven with so much zeal by the then Treasurer and now Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls – hit the state’s economy hard.”

The Premier said with Queensland’s economy returning to growth of 3.9% - compared with 1.2% for the rest of the nation, she was confident more and more people would keep moving on up to Queensland.

“With inflated proceeds from selling their house in cold capitals, they can head beyond the Tweed to the warmth and competitively priced quality homes and units in Queensland,” the Premier said.

“The August quarter RP Data records the Brisbane medium dwelling price is under $489,000. In Melbourne it’s more than $695,000 and in Sydney more than $909,000.

“Queenslanders also pay less in taxes and charges than the average of other states and territories.

“The Macquarie Bank has reported “the latest wave of interstate migration to Queensland is on the rise.”

“Macquarie estimates the migration shift could inject $8.1 billion into the Brisbane and southeast Queensland markets, equivalent to 25% of current turnover.”

The Premier said an exodus to the Sunshine State will also significantly boost consumer spending.

“While my Government’s priority is for Queenslanders, particularly young Queenslanders, to get into the property market, we are making our pitch to the south too.

“A media campaign – “Queensland Move up in the World” is highlighting our many great advantages.

“By aggressively promoting our climate, lifestyle, education and incentives like the $20,000 First Home Owners Grant, plus our growth and potential I am confident interstate migration will continue to grow.”
