New-look Collins Ave bridge to open in March

The $3.1 million Collins Avenue Bridge is expected to re-open as its fresh, safer self by March.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the joint Palaszczuk Government-Cairns Regional Council project was an essential link in the Cairns Airport connection and Captain Cook Highway.

“Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists will all benefit from this critical infrastructure project,” Dr Lynham said.

“Importantly it’s also creating nine jobs in the region.”

The Palaszczuk Government is contributing $1.5 million to the project through its Building our Regions critical infrastructure program, with Cairns Regional Council contributing the remaining $1.6 million.

“Our $375 million Building our Regions program is pumping funds into regional communities across the state.

“To date it is supporting almost 1300 jobs through projects with an estimated total value of more than $420 million,” Dr Lynham said.

The bridge is almost complete.  Demolition of the existing bridge occurred in September 2016.  Construction of the pier and abutments commenced in October 2016 and were completed in early December 2016.

The deck is finished and work is currently being undertaken on the approaches and finishes – for example the footpaths, landscaping and lighting. This is expected to be completed by the end of January 2017, dependent on the weather.

“Replacing this ageing bridge will improve flood mitigation, provide safer access for cyclists and pedestrians and offer better driving conditions – particularly for heavy vehicles – in this critical upgrade to the Edge Hill, Captain Cook Highway and Cairns Airport connection,” Dr Lynham said.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the new bridge will improve an important link for Cairns.

“The new bridge will improve safety for pedestrians, while continuing to provide an important link to a popular arts and leisure area for the city,” he said.
