Premier welcomes rain and reaffirms drought support for primary producers

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed rain across large parts of western Queensland, but reaffirmed her Government’s support for the State’s drought-affected primary producers.

Visiting the State’s central west with Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne today, the Premier said more than 83% of Queensland remained drought-declared, including the Longreach and Maranoa Regional Council areas she is visiting today.

Thirty-five councils and four part council areas drought declared, with 80 individually droughted properties (IDPs) in a further 15 council areas.

“The rain is welcomed, but the drought has been so severe and so prolonged that we will need significant follow-up rain,” the Premier said.

“During the course of this drought, the Queensland Government has paid $77.5 million in assistance to primary producers through its Drought Relief Assistance Scheme (DRAS).”

    DRAS provides:

    • freight subsidies for transporting fodder
    • freight subsidies for transporting water
    • rebate on the purchase and installation of water infrastructure purchased for animal welfare needs.

Properties that have had their drought declaration revoked may be eligible for:

    • freight subsidies for transporting livestock returning from agistment
    • freight subsidies for transporting livestock purchased for restocking.

Drought declarations are based on recommendations of Local Drought Committees.

The committees are due to assess local pasture conditions and make their recommendations to the Agriculture Minister in April.
