Construction is expected to start on three new Government-led housing projects in Townsville by the end of the year, supporting more than 125 contractors and injecting more than $3.3 million into the local economy.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said two of the projects, totalling around $890,000, would be completed by local contractor Ron Jones the Builder, starting in October.

“We know that by investing in housing we are also investing in our communities, and this funding is expected to create valuable jobs for local tradies and training opportunities for apprentices during construction,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“Both projects involve the construction of two two-bedroom units, which are expected to be completed in February 2017.

“These projects will create around 52 jobs for local tradies, including opportunities for carpenters, form workers, concreters, block layers, plumbers, electricians and roofers – just to name a few.

“Once complete, these units will also help to meet the needs of their future residents with inclusive design features including wider hallways, level thresholds, grab rails and extra clearance spaces.”

Mrs O’Rourke said work on a new $3.26 million apartment development was also expected to start in December, with the contract being awarded to Oonoonba based company Ellis Developments.

“This three-storey apartment block will support more than 75 jobs during construction, including five opportunities for local apprentices,” she said.

“Work is expected to be complete on these 12 single-bedroom apartments, by July 2017.

“We know Townsville needs jobs and through this funding, as well as our Back to Work, Accelerated Works and Skilling Queenslanders for Work packages, we are creating local opportunities and helping bring confidence back to our region.”

Funding for these projects has been commitment as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $38.8 million public housing investment in Townsville this financial year.
