Aurukun Shire Council today today opened its new Cairns office to better serve locals and conduct business in the Far North’s major economic centre.

Acting Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt officially opened the new premises, congratulating the Council on this significant investment.

“This milestone investment illustrates Aurukun Shire Council’s strong commercial viability and commitment to long-term financial planning and stability,” Mr Pitt said.

“Establishing a permanent base in Cairns will strengthen Aurukun Shire Council’s strong presence in the city which started almost 20 years ago.

“In 1997 the Council was operating from a rather basic premises at the airport, before moving to 351 Sheridan Street where the lease ended earlier this year.

“Now they have a proud new permanent home on McLeod Street, saying goodbye to their previous leasing arrangements and instead taking on the challenges and rewards of property ownership.

“As the Ministerial Government Champion for Aurukun I strongly support this move to further ensure the concerns and achievements of this community receive greater recognition.

“This is a smart investment to ensure the voices from one of Australia’s most remote communities are heard loud and clear.”

The new office will accommodate council’s Cairns-based corporate services staff including business development, grants management, finance, purchasing, payroll and information technology functions.

Artwork from Aurukun artists and the Wik Kugu Art Centre will feature in the new office, located at 200 McLeod Street, Cairns North.
