The Honourable Leanne Donaldson

Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson has announced that the Palaszczuk Government will reward outstanding contributions to the sector with two awards.

“It is important to recognise those innovators and leaders who provide great examples to their peers,” Minister Donaldson said.

“That is why I am pleased to announce that we are establishing two awards in 2016 to recognise those who have made outstanding contributions to a better future in agriculture, fisheries or forestry.”

The Minister said the Peter Kenny Medal and $3000 was the prize for innovation leading to profitability and sustainability.

“Mr Kenny was an influential and devoted advocate of agriculture, rural education and regional communities,” the Minister said.

“He was a teacher working in rural and remote regions of Queensland before going on to manage and own agricultural enterprises.

“Peter Kenny had a passion for agriculture and rural issues and his focus was clearly on educating the next generation of producers.

“Applicants must be involved in agriculture, fisheries or forestry in some capacity. Candidates will be considered from agribusiness, education, farm-based production, the supply chain, research or advocacy.”

The second prize is the Minister’s Emerging Leaders Award.

“It will recognise an individual from within the primary industry sector who has demonstrated outstanding leadership or potential to make a contribution to their field or profession, the wider industry and the community,” the Minister said.

“It is important to encourage young leaders and for this reason the prize will be for those aged 18 to 30.

“The winner will receive a $2000 prize to further develop their career and leadership capabilities.

“I believe the prizes further demonstrate the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to drive innovation in the sector.”

The Minister said nominations for both awards would open on 19 August and close on 14 October.

Winners will be announced at the AgFutures Conference in Brisbane on Tuesday, 22 November.
