Statement from Science Minister Leeanne Enoch on CSIRO

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business
The Honourable Leeanne Enoch

Whilst I cautiously welcome today’s announcement by the Turnbull Government of the small steps they are taking to reverse the massive cuts to climate change research at the CSIRO, far more needs to be done.

An additional 15 climate scientists does not offset the 1700 jobs slashed across the CSIRO by the Turnbull/Abbott Government since 2013.

I remain concerned about the ongoing commitment of the Federal Government to joint research initiatives with the Queensland Government to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

I renew the calls I made in February for the Turnbull Government to guarantee joint programs into the effects of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef will continue, something former Federal Science Minister Christopher Pyne refused to do.
