Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Bill Byrne

As part of a Road Safety Week message, Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne and Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating have reminded motorists not to drive impaired.

Minister Byrne said Road Safety Week gave Queenslanders the opportunity to think about and engage in conversations around road safety.

“We are encouraging you to speak up for road safety,” he said.

“Use this week to talk to loved ones, friends or colleagues about road safety and challenge those behaviours that lead to devastation on our roads.

“Too many Queenslanders know the enormous toll of fatal crashes on families and communities and we need to take a stand.”

Assistant Commissioner Keating said police and emergency services were in the community spreading the road safety message this week.

“Enforcement, our traditional role, needs to go alongside education,” he said.

“Our officers’ first-hand experience provides invaluable insight for the community.

“Today’s focus is on impaired driving. Police performed over 3.49 million roadside breath tests in 2015/16 with more than 19,200 detections. For roadside drug testing one in five tests were positive.

“Do not drive impaired. You will be caught anywhere, anytime.”
