Education Minister Kate Jones today announced the name of the new special school scheduled to open in Cairns in time for the start of term one 2017.

Ms Jones said the $25 million school at Woree on the city’s south side would be called the Cairns State Special School, catering for students with intellectual impairment from Prep to Year 12.

“The new Cairns State Special School will create more than 120 additional places for students with disability in world class facilities,” she said.

“The naming of the school signals the start of an enrolment campaign to ensure strong student numbers on the first day of term one.

“It also allows time for the establishment of uniforms, logos, school signage and website.

“The Cairns State Special School will be a flagship school for educating students with disability in Queensland and fulfils a State Government commitment to meet the growing demand for resources for students with disability in the far north.”

The school’s design also includes a multipurpose meeting space which will be made available for community use.

Ms Jones said the name of Cairns State Special School was recommended by a reference group established to consult with the community, including prospective parents of students with disability.

“The location of the school means students will be able to access classes, sporting events and facilities at the nearby primary and secondary schools as appropriate,” she said.

Ms Chris Simmons has been appointed as principal of the new school. Her 30 years’ experience in education systems across Australia includes leadership of special education programs and services.

Ms Simmons said she was looking forward to her new role and meeting students and parents.

“Cairns State Special School will provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cater to the diverse learning needs and priorities of students from Prep to Year 12,” she said.

“Our students will be provided personalised and relevant opportunities to reach their potential and have a voice and choice in their learning and pathway.

“Work is underway establishing authentic and purposeful connections that will provide support for students and their families into the future.”

An official naming ceremony for the Cairns State Special School is scheduled to take place in late January 2017.
