Construction underway on specialised disability housing in Cairns

Construction is underway on a $1.2 million specialised disability housing duplex in Cairns that will allow local people with disability to move out of health and aged care facilities, and back into the community.

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke today inspected the Mooroobool site which will provide sustainable and long-term living arrangements for four people with high physical needs and create local jobs.

“This accommodation will provide a safe place for people who currently live in public hospitals, health facilities and residential aged care in Far North Queensland,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“This new housing means people with disability who need round the clock care will have appropriate accommodation suitable for their needs, including an on-site carer.

“The construction of two, two-bedroom units and a dedicated carer’s unit will also create local jobs and flow on benefits to businesses in the far north, at a time when jobs are so important in this region.

“The move to more independent living will also help individuals and families prepare for the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).”

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the Queensland Government had committed $860,000 towards the project and Cootharinga North Queensland had contributed an additional $360,000 towards the cost of the land.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to work with community organisations like Cootharinga North Queensland to deliver suitable and supported accommodation for people with disability, while achieving greater value for the community,” Mr Crawford said.

“It’s great to see that an additional $80,000 has been also raised through the Babinda Bargain Centre– a second-hand clothing and furniture store run by volunteers - to support the project.

“This fantastic project will not only support people with disability, but will continue to support local jobs during construction and beyond.”

Cootharinga CEO Peter Mewett said this project offered state-of-the-art equipment to its residents.

“This funding has enabled us to provide innovative and accessible housing for residents with disability in Far North Queensland,” Mr Mewett said.

“For the first time we are using improved technology for an in-ceiling hoist system in one of the two units which allows two residents with high care needs access their bedroom, bathroom and lounge area.

“The other unit will have an electronic hoist which enables the residents access to the unit.”

The accommodation is on track to be completed by mid-2017.
