The Palaszczuk Government is delivering the Mackay Ring Road

The route for the proposed Mackay Ring Road on the Bruce Highway has now been finalised with early works to commence shortly.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey today announced the Queensland government had finalised the plans for construction.

“I’m pleased to advise that early works can begin in the coming weeks which include the relocation of services, earthworks and the realignment of local roads,” Mr Bailey said.

“We're getting on with delivering this project and delivering jobs for the region.”

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the Mackay Ring Road project is the largest project ever undertaken by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads in the Mackay and Whitsunday region.

“The project will support an average of 603 jobs during construction and it will also boost local industry by allowing greater access to the Mackay Port,” Ms Gilbert said.

“Early works will start shortly ahead of major construction, scheduled to begin in 2017 and will take about three years to complete.”

Member for Mirani Jim Pearce said the project would provide a safer and more efficient road network by removing heavy vehicles from the urban section of the Bruce Highway through Mackay.

“The new road will improve safety for residents by taking heavy vehicles travelling along the Bruce Highway off local streets,” Mr Pearce said.

“It will also reduce travel times for inter-regional trips and freight vehicles and address the traffic congestion and accident risks of the existing route.”

Mr Bailey said his department recognises the impact the project will have on surrounding residents.

“We’re committed to maintaining regular contact with affected property owners to reach fair and reasonable compensation for land required,” Mr Bailey said.

“The input provided by property owners has been invaluable during the project’s detailed design process and we appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by those affected.”

The $560 million project is jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian governments.
