Education Minister Kate Jones today announced the first 17 projects to receive funding under a new grants scheme to promote excellence in educational research.

“The Education Horizon grants support research projects that will deliver positive changes for Queensland students,” Ms Jones said.

“We have had significant interest from researchers with 98 applications received in the first round.

“The 17 successful projects will support research in every sector of education from early childhood to training.

“We want to make sure that we are supporting researchers as they look into evidence-based best practice across our education system.”

Ms Jones said the Palaszczuk Government was leading the way in support for educational research.

“Queensland is fortunate to have the only education and training research grant scheme of this kind in the country,” she said.

“The annual injection of $1 million through the Education Horizon grants will ensure that Queensland is leading the way in education research.”

Ms Jones said that students in Queensland will benefit from the research being supported.

Education Horizon will deliver value for money by leveraging the expertise and support of the Queensland research community,” she said.

“We will see research into a variety of subjects including student wellbeing, contextualised learning, connecting education sites with the community, Indigenous culture in the classroom and support for rural and remote early childhood education educators.

“The department’s policies, programs and practices will be improved through these research programs and Queensland students will reap the benefits.”

The 17 successful projects funded in the first round of grants will begin before 30 September 2016.
