For the next month Queenslanders will have the chance to experience culture, entertainment and cuisine from across the world as part of a state-wide celebration that kicks off today (1 August).

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Grace Grace said Queensland Multicultural Month was about bringing Queenslanders together to celebrate and better understand our cultural diversity.

“We want all Queenslanders to try something new during August and experience the rich culture and traditions that make up our wonderful state,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic way to bring people together to share, taste, see, hear and experience our multiculturalism.

“With more than 60 events – from cultural festivals and fairs, exhibitions, musical performances and workshops, open days to market days – being held across the state, there’s sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Ms Grace said Queensland Multicultural Month was the state’s largest celebration of our unique diversity and its benefits.

“Formerly run over a week, this is the first year it has been extended to a full month,” she said.

“One of the major highlights during the month is the Culture Train which will set out from Brisbane’s Roma Street Station as part of a Statewide tour.

“It will bring an exciting program of free workshops and concerts, by both traditional and contemporary multicultural artists, to more than 10 regional locations before finishing in Brisbane at the end of the month.”

Ms Grace said another exciting event during the month was the annual Queensland Multicultural Awards luncheon on 20 August.

“I am really looking forward to attending this prestigious event that shines a spotlight on the incredible Queenslanders who support and promote a united and harmonious Queensland community,” she said.

“Tickets are available via our website but they are selling fast.”

Queensland Multicultural Month is supported by Queensland Rail, Commonwealth Bank, SBS and Access Community Services.
