Energy Queensland is supporting our brightest young talent as 24 new recruits join the ranks of the Energex apprentice program based at the Esitrain Centre at Rocklea.

Minister for Energy Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was supporting jobs and new apprentices through the newly merged electricity company, Energy Queensland.

“24 new apprentices have started their training with Energex this week, setting them up for a strong future career,” Mr Bailey said.

“The current intake includes two female apprentices and is made up of eight electrical fitter mechanics, eight electrical linespersons and eight electrical cable jointers.

“Not only is this evidence of the Palaszczuk Government supporting jobs, but Energy Queensland is also employing bright young talent that will make a significant contribution to our state.”

Mr Bailey said many apprentices, once completing their initial training, would go on to be part of Queensland’s front line team.

“Restoring power during storm events and maintaining the network to keep the power on across Queensland is an important job,” he said.

“It is an extremely technical profession, but also an incredibly rewarding one with millions of Queenslanders relying on the crews on the ground to restore power when they need it most.

“Energex is also carrying out a Battery Storage Trial at Rocklea that is providing Energex with real time data to better understand how best to integrate new technologies into the network.

“These new recruits will gain first-hand experience with the latest technology as part of their training here at Rocklea, which only cements Energex’s reputation as producing some of the world’s top electricians.”

Energex Acting CEO Peter Weaver said graduates of the apprenticeship program had gone on to achieve big things in the energy industry.

“The apprentices will undergo world-class training during their time at EsiTrain, under the tutelage of highly experienced teachers, which will hold them in great stead for their future careers,” Mr Weaver said.

“Graduates of this program have progressed through the ranks to take on senior roles within Energex, while others had forged successful careers in the construction and mining industry.

“I wish our new recruits all the best for their time here at EsiTrain and their future endeavours in the industry.”
