New netball centre commitment reaffirmed with Firebirds’ historic win

The Queensland Firebirds’ historic back-to-back ANZ Netball Championships victory today also marked the next stage in establishing a new home for Queensland netball, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said

The Premier said the Queensland Firebirds’ 69-67 victory would be a further boost for the popularity of the sport in Queensland.

“Today’s victory in double extra time - after their epic victory last year - shows just how outstanding the Firebirds are and how tough the NSW Swifts have been,” she said.

“The inspiring Firebirds along with hardworking coaches and helpers sees record numbers of girls playing netball.”

“My Government is committed to build a new home for Queensland netball.  It’s a popular sport and we want to encourage it at all levels from those girls just starting to play to those elite athletes playing for the Firebirds and the Diamonds.”

Expressions of interest to construct the centre closed on Friday, 29 July.

Treasurer and Minister for Sport Curtis Pitt said the new State Netball Centre to be built at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre would provide a further boost to the sport.

“The Government has committed $30 million for the new centre, which will include eight indoor hard courts, player change room facilities, administration offices for Netball Queensland,” he said.

“Since January 2015, the Queensland Government has invested $3 million in supporting netball across the state through the Get in the Game initiative,” he said.
