Treasurer and Minister for Sport Curtis Pitt has congratulated Queenslander Cate Campbell on her astounding swim result heading into the Rio Olympics.

Cate broke the world record for 100m freestyle with a scintillating time of 52.06 seconds – beating the previous record set by Germany’s Britta Steffen in 2009 by 0.01 second.

“This is excellent news for Cate and something she has trained very hard for,” said Mr Pitt.

“Taking this form into the Rio Olympics is very encouraging for Cate and the Australian swim team.

"I'm sure all Queenslanders will join me in congratulating Cate.

“Cate is one of our Queensland Academy of Sport athletes representing Australia at the Rio Olympics from 5 to 21 August 2016."
