Statement from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk re Visit to Eddie Mabo’s gravesite

I would like to thank Aunty Bonita Mabo and Family, the Mabo Families, Meriam Families and others who graciously gave me permission to visit Uncle Eddie Mabo’s grave on Mer Island today.

On behalf of the people of Queensland and the Queensland Government, I took the opportunity to pay my deep respect to the late Uncle Eddie Mabo, and acknowledge his effort, passion and commitment, along with that of Aunty Bonita Mabo and the Plaintiffs, the late Uncle James Rice, Uncle Dave Passi and Uncle Sam Passi, in the recognition of the Rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and all Indigenous Peoples.

It was the leadership, vision and persistence of Uncle Eddie Mabo and the other claimants in pursuing 10 years of legal action that led to the concept of Terra Nullius being overturned, and have the land rights and unique connection to traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples recognised.

Mr Mabo’s drive and energy brought about change of historical significance.

He is an inspiration to all of us.
