The Vines Creek Bridges replacement project has reached a milestone this week with tenders called for the supply of deck units.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said it was an exciting time for the project, which was brought forward under the Accelerated Works Program (AWP).

“The delivery of this project was brought forward to generate jobs in the Mackay district,” Mr Bailey said.

“Thanks to the AWP, the overall detailed design is now expected to be completed by the end of the year and construction is to start in April 2017.

“The structural design of replacement bridges is already completed and this is being integrated with the design of the approaches and the Mackay Regional Council’s levee wall.

“Preliminary works to relocate phone, electrical and water infrastructure also started in May this year to get ready for construction.”

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said almost 170 deck units (168) are required for the project, ranging from 18 to 20 metres long.

“A contract for the supply of bridge deck units is scheduled to be awarded in September,” Mrs Gilbert said.

“Once completed, the increased mass limits of the replacement bridges will improve freight efficiency on Mackay Slade Point Road, especially for heavy vehicles accessing the Mackay Port.

The project will also provide improved cyclist and pedestrian access on Mackay Slade Point Road.

An average of 42 jobs will be supported over the life of the project.”
