Treasurer, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Sport Curtis Pitt has officially opened the newly refurbished Aurukun Sports Hall.

Mr Pitt was accompanied by two of the Palaszczuk Government’s Deadly Sports Program Ambassadors – Former NRL player Scott Prince and former Queensland softball player Kelly Mc Kellar-Nathan.

“The opening of the newly refurbished Aurukun PCYC represents a very positive step forward in the journey towards the return of long-term peace and stability to the Aurukun community,” Mr Pitt said.

“The $1 million redevelopment includes a new basketball court, gym equipment and new offices – representing a major capital works investment in Aurukun that was jointly funded by the Palaszczuk and Commonwealth Governments.

“It will offer a modern and safe venue for the young people of Aurukun to come together, have fun and learn strategies to live a healthier and happier life.

“I’m thrilled to be visiting with our Deadly Sports Program Ambassadors, Scott and Kelly, who will bring some star power in aspiring local kids to make healthy choices, lead active lives and strive to achieve their dreams.

“The Palaszczuk Government is also supporting the PCYC by providing $1.14 million in funding to deliver youth development activities to increase engagement and reduce offending.”

Another major project infrastructure project, the $1.7 million installation of new CCTV cameras, will be completed this week.

“There are now 65 CCTV cameras operational in priority areas across the community, improving safety and quality of life for Aurukun residents,” Mr Pitt said.

“We’ve seen in other communities that CCTV cameras have contributed significantly to a reduction in crime and we expect to see the same in Aurukun.

“Our next priority will be working to improve telecommunication services to connect Aurukun locals with the internet and the rest of the world, ensuring they have the same access to technology and educational opportunities.

“The Palaszczuk Government is working to match jobs with the skills of locals and also assist residents to be job-ready for employment opportunities as they arise.

“The Senior Government Coordinator in Aurukun continues to work with council, community groups, and state and Commonwealth Governments, to ensure good coordination of all the work under the Premier’s Four Point Plan.”
