Station opening marks bright future for rural firefighting in Cooyar

Cooyar firefighters have celebrated the opening of a new fire station today, which will help them provide a high-level response to local communities in the years to come. 

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Bill Byrne said the $126,000 facility is a welcome addition ahead of the bushfire season.

“We are always looking at ways to support firefighters, and enhance the services provided to the communities they assist,” Mr Byrne said.

“The new facility is a welcome boost to Rural Fire Service (RFS) Cooyar’s response capability, especially in light of the approaching bushfire season.

“It will be home to several firefighters in the area, supporting about 68 volunteers and communities within the Toowoomba Regional Council region.

“The four-bay fire station has also been built to house brigade equipment, including two fire trucks.

“Crews in this region need to be ready to respond to a wide variety of incidents, including bushfires, structure fires and road traffic crashes.

“This new facility will ensure they have a strong home base and will be well placed to respond to the community’s needs well into the future.”

Assistant Commissioner for South Western Region Steve Smith said the new facility would also provide a great meeting and training base.

“Our firefighters and supporting members play a pivotal part in keeping the community safe in times of crisis,” Mr Smith said.

“They spend hours training and improving their skills, in order to help keep Cooyar residents and surrounding towns safe.

“This new facility will mean firefighters in the area can continue to hone their skills here and provide a top-class response to this area.”
