Highly respected Queensland businessman Greg Skyring has been appointed as the state’s Commissioner for Electrical Safety for the next three years.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the Palaszczuk Government had reinstated the position to deliver on a key election commitment.

"Mr Skyring is the perfect person to provide a community voice to government and act as an independent advocate for electrical safety," Ms Grace said.

“He will work to ensure closer ties between industry and government, while developing strategies to improve electrical safety in Queensland.

“Greg is a qualified electrical mechanic and has held executive positions in multi-national engineering, construction, service and manufacturing, working for companies including Siemens, ABB Industry, Downer Engineering, O’Donnell Griffin and Lend Lease.

“He’s had extensive practical and strategic managerial experience in the electrical industry and the development of health and safety management systems.”

Ms Grace said Mr Skyring would have an important leadership role as Chair of the Electrical Safety Board and Chair of the Electrical Licensing Committee, while providing advice directly to her on electrical safety matters.

Mr Skyring starts in the position on 18 July.
