Director of Child Protection Litigation appointed

The Palaszczuk Government has appointed Mr. Nigel Miller as Queensland’s first Director of Child Protection Litigation.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said this crucial role in ensuring the safety of vulnerable children across the state honours a Palaszczuk Government commitment to implement the recommendations of the 2013 report of the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry.

“Mr Miller will be responsible for independently deciding whether an application for a child protection order should be made for a child,” said Mrs D’Ath.

“He and his office will also have to determine what type of order should be applied for, and have responsibility for the carriage of those court proceedings.”

Mrs D’Ath said Mr Miller brings formidable experience across a range of fields dealing with the complex issues surrounding child protection to his new role.

“Mr Miller was called to the Queensland Bar in 2004 and admitted as a barrister of the High Court in 2005.

“In the 13 years since he started working for Legal Aid Queensland, he has spent five years as the principal lawyer in LAQ’s Children and Young People Team, and is currently the Assistant Director of LAQ’s Family Law Services.

“Previously he had worked for LAQ’s Child Protection Unit and is a founding board member of the Child Protection Practitioners Association of Queensland.

“In 2014 he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to explore the establishment of a child protection law specialist accreditation program in Queensland.

“I congratulate Mr Miller on his appointment and wish him well as he and the team supporting him within Crown Law deal with the very difficult but vital issue of ensuring the welfare and safety of Queensland children.”
