Queensland high school students will study Psychology for the first time as part of an overhaul of senior education.

Education Minister Kate Jones today announced a Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) review of the senior curriculum as part of the transition to a new system of senior assessment from 2018.

“This is the first curriculum-wide review of authority subjects in decades,” Ms Jones said.

“Close to 80 senior syllabuses will be reviewed to ensure we are giving students the skills they need to succeed in a competitive, technology-driven economy and society.

“The new senior syllabuses will encourage critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, personal and social skills and ICT skills.

“The QCAA has consulted with teachers and experts on the content of the curriculum.

“Thousands of educators have provided feedback on the first 35 draft syllabuses to be released so far.”

Ms Jones said some current syllabuses would be incorporated into new subjects.

“The valued learning in Study of Society will feature in a new syllabus titled Psychology,” she said.

“Two ICT subjects will be incorporated into a single Digital Technology subject.

“Learning in Graphics and Technology Studies will be incorporated into a new subject called Design Technology.

“Prevocational Mathematics will be renamed Essential Mathematics and Mathematics C will be called Specialist Mathematics to bring subject titles in line with a national approach.”
