A major investment in modernising Queensland’s social housing portfolio is at the centre of the Department of Housing and Public Works $452.5 million capital program outlined in today’s State Budget.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said the $209.1 million investment is a reflection of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to building a modern social housing system that is responsive to the needs of Queenslanders.

“As our population grows and ages we are seeing the housing needs of Queenslanders change,” Mr de Brenni said.

“This budget is an investment in building the right kind of modern adaptable housing that is suited to the needs of Queenslanders.

This investment includes:

  • the completion of construction of 368 rental units,
  • the purchase of 111 land lots,
  • the commencement of construction of a further 277 rental units,
  • upgrades to existing social housing.

Mr de Brenni said the focus on housing with adaptable design is an important part of preparations for the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“Our government is committed to giving people choice when it comes to where they live and who they live with,” Mr de Brenni said.

Typically new social housing apartments are designed to either Platinum, Gold and Silver Levels under the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government is committed to making sure that all Queenslanders can share in a brighter housing future and that is reflected in this budget,” Mr de Brenni said.
