The Palaszczuk Government will deliver an extra $33.5 million in funding over four years to grow tourism and make Queensland the number-one destination for millions of Asian visitors.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones said the Advance Queensland: Connecting with Asia – tourism jobs in the regions package would drive growth throughout the state.

"Our tourism sector is emerging as a major driver of economic growth as more Asian visitors come to Queensland, spending money and creating jobs across the state,” Ms Jones said.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government is taking a focused approach to make Queensland Australia’s market leader for the Asian tourism market and to build on the momentum that has seen record visitation numbers to Queensland.”

Ms Jones said the new funding boost would help attract Asian tourists by:

  • securing more international air routes;
  • creating innovative tourism products;
  • building stronger relationships with targeted Asian cities;
  • building the digital capability of Queensland tourism businesses to secure more Asian business; and
  • growing awareness of Queensland experiences.

“The $33.5 million Advance Queensland: Connecting with Asia – tourism jobs in the regions package will target key emerging markets in Asia for specific regional Queensland destinations.

“It will capitalise on the success we’ve already had securing new and additional flights from China, Hong Kong and Canada into the Gold Coast, Cairns and Brisbane through the successful Attracting Aviation Investment Fund.”

Ms Jones said the budget also delivered $50 million in funding over two years for Tourism and Events Queensland, extending the funding guarantee announced last year.

“We will continue to provide certainty for industry ensuring $400 million in guaranteed funding over four years,” she said.

“This funding enables TEQ to work in partnership with industry to drive visitation and inspire the world to experience Queensland.

“It means TEQ can enter into longer term partnerships to market Queensland’s experiences globally and to the rest of Australia.”
