A new smart phone app will help state school parents stay connected and engaged with their child’s education.

Education Minister Kate Jones launched the QParents app at the EduTech International Congress and Expo today.

Ms Jones said the QParents app and website would give parents 24-hour, direct access to their child’s personal details and education records, as well as allowing them to pay school invoices online.

“QParents provides an easy way for parents to communicate with their child’s school direct from their smart phone,” she said.

“It also has incredible benefits for schools as student absences can be reported online, rather than over email or phone, and many other administrative tasks, saving both time and money.

“I would like to thank P&Cs Queensland for their involvement in the development of QParents.

“Their advice and input has been vital to the development of an online portal and app that is both safe and parent-friendly.”

Ms Jones said QParents had been trialled in close to 300 schools and had received feedback from parents and schools that was both positive and useful.

“I’d like to thank these schools and parents for participating in the trial and for giving us incredibly useful feedback that has helped us to make improvements to QParents along the way,” she said.

“We had around 18,000 parents of more than 25,000 students register during the trial.

“Parents told us they loved being able to see their child’s timetable and pay invoices online, as well as being able to download report cards directly.

“We’re looking forward to making QParents available to all Queensland state schools so more parents can benefit from this app.”

Ms Jones said parents and carers would still be able to access their child’s records through the traditional methods or by contacting their school directly.

“I want to reassure people without Internet access at home that they will not miss out on receiving important information from their child’s school,” she said.

“Registering for QParents is entirely optional for both schools and parents.”

The QParents app is available from the App Store and will be available for android devices from next month. It will be progressively rolled out to schools.
