Nicholls flags jobs cuts when we need them most

Treasurer, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Sport
The Honourable Curtis Pitt

Tim Nicholls’ editorial in today’s The Australian will send a shiver down the spines of all Queenslanders who suffered at his hands during the tumultuous Newman Years.

When he talks about managing expenses, we all know he means job cuts.

This is a man who gutted confidence in Queensland by sacking tens of thousands of public servants and failing to invest in major projects to keep Queensland moving.

The bitter harvest of Nicholls’ ideological campaign caused unemployment in Queensland to rise to 6.9 per cent.

Tim Nicholls put the brakes on Queensland’s economy as every job hunter during the LNP years remembers and our State is only just starting to recover.

The LNP haven’t articulated any long-term strategies to improve the state’s fiscal position or committed to funding the infrastructure we need right now.

Their only solution remains their one-point plan to sack staff and sell-off our assets for a short-term sugar hit in their Budget.

The Palaszczuk Government’s 2015-16 Budget has been successful in rebooting Queensland’s economy, rebuilding confidence, stabilising debt and restoring services.

The Palaszczuk Government’s 2016-17 Budget will continue implementing our Economic Plan with our focus on job creation, transitioning Queensland to a post-mining boom economy and returning business confidence after it was shattered by Mr Nicholls and the LNP.

We will be doing even more to work with business and attract new investment in our state with a specific focus in the Budget on growing our regional economies as they transition out of the mining boom.

A leopard can’t change its spots and Tim Nicholls won’t be able to resist cutting jobs and services across Queensland.

The Palaszczuk Government’s 2015-16 Budget put Queensland back on track and on June 14 I will lay out our plan to continue this successful rebuilding of jobs, business confidence and optimism in Queensland.

We will be shamelessly looking to poach businesses and contracts from interstate, with a specific focus in the Budget on growing our regional economies as they transition out of the mining boom.

Right now Queensland needs jobs and investment. This has to be our priority in the wake of Tim Nicholls’ economic mismanagement during his failed time as Treasurer.
