Education Minister Kate Jones today told State Parliament construction of Cairns Special School was on track for completion in 2017.

Ms Jones said construction was progressing with slabs poured for the community hub building and library.

“With fine weather this week the slab will also be poured for the school administration building,” she said.

“We’re on track for Cairns Special School to open its doors to students for the start of the 2017 school year.”

Ms Jones said the $25 million project was creating opportunities for local contractors and suppliers driving growth in the local construction industry.

“Hutchinson Builders are delivering this project that is creating more than 100 local jobs during construction,” she said.

“The school will have state-of-the-art facilities including 20 classroom spaces for both junior and senior students, specialised teaching spaces, a library, and outdoor play areas.

“A multipurpose meeting space has also been included in the design which will be made available for community use.”

Ms Jones said the brand new school would cater for up to 120 special education students from Prep to Year 12.
