The first Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) firefighter recruits for 2016 have graduated at a ceremony at the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy at Lytton today.

Thirteen new urban firefighters will take up positions in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Mackay, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Mount Isa and Cairns.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Bill Byrne MP said the recruits were entering a rewarding profession committed to keeping Queenslanders safe.

“Queensland communities count on firefighters to protect them in times of need,” Minister Byrne said.

“Firefighters are required to have the highest level of physical and mental fitness, and a willingness to put the safety of others before their own.

“The QFES firefighter selection and training program is exacting and I have full confidence in the ability of today’s graduates to be able to meet the needs of their communities.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the firefighter recruits’ drive and passion to succeed in their chosen careers was clear, and that they were a welcome addition to the profession.

“Each of the recruits graduating today has met the high standards expected by QFES and the industry,” Ms Carroll said.

“The intensive, 78-day course that they have undertaken and successfully completed has equipped them with lifesaving skills in firefighting, road crash and technical rescue, and hazardous material management.”

As well as constant on-the-job training, urban firefighters continue formal studies in firefighting and emergency operations for two and half years after graduation, further building their skills and enhancing QFES’ service delivery.
