Women star in Health Board appointments

As a result of decisions taken by the Palaszczuk Labor Government Hospital and Health Boards across the state will, for the first time ever, have more than 50 per cent female membership. 

The appointment of a total of 78 members to 16 Hospital and Health Boards including 44 women which represents 57 per cent of appointments announced today.

“As a result of these appointments more than 52 per cent of all Hospital and Health Board members across Queensland will be women,” Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said.

“This is an increase from 41 per cent under the LNP and shows the commitment of the Palaszczuk Government to ensure women are represented at all levels of leadership, on boards and government bodies.”

Mr Dick said the Department of Health had run an extensive recruitment process to attract a diverse range of applicants and get the best people into these important positions.

More than 900 applications were received, with 49 per cent from female applicants.

The Minister thanked the board members whose appointments will expire on 17 May 2016.

“I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work and commitment of all board members and chairs. The commitment and contribution of board members across the state is of great value to local communities," he said.

"To those board member and chairs who have not sought or not been reappointed I wish them well in their future endeavours and thank them for their service."

Queensland’s 16 Hospital and Health Boards responsible under the Health and Hospital Board Act 2011 for local performance of their health services and direct the delivery of public health services within their communities. The role of a local health and hospital board is crucial to the delivery of quality public health services to the people of Queensland.

“To those members whose appointments have been announced today I want to extend my best wishes," Mr Dick said. 

"You have been given a wonderful opportunity to positively influence the delivery of health services in Queensland.

"I look forward to working with each of you as we strive to make the Queensland health system the best in the nation."
