Fanfare 2016 Regional Festivals kick off across Queensland next week with a record number of young musicians, bands and orchestras lined up to take part.

Education Minister Kate Jones said close to 27,500 instrumental music students from more than 420 Queensland state schools would participate in Fanfare this year.

“Fanfare showcases the incredible musical talent and the high standard of instrumental music education we have in our schools right across the state,” Ms Jones said.

“This biennial event began in 1985 and since then more than 160,000 instrumental music students have taken part.

“With record numbers of students participating this year, we will see some great entertainment at regional festivals held across the state.”

Ms Jones said Fanfare’s popularity continued to rise with a record 982 ensembles performing in 40 regional festivals.

“It’s great to see schools from every corner of the state participating with many entering more than one ensemble,” she said.

“Ensembles will perform in 40 Regional festivals from Monday 16 May through to 10 June, followed by finals in each region.

“The adjudicators will select up to five primary ensembles and five secondary ensembles to perform at the grand final concert at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 18 and 19 August.

“I encourage Queenslanders to get involved and attend one of the regional festivals or finals in their local area.”

Ms Jones said the Palaszczuk Government had partnered with international venue management group AEG Ogden to bring Fanfare to Queensland.

“I would like to thank AEG Ogden for sponsoring Fanfare and supporting our state school instrumental music students,” she said.
