The Palaszczuk Government’s Accelerated Works Program is creating jobs and opportunities for local contractors in North Queensland, with many projects already underway.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O’Rourke told State Parliament today that the program was designed to bring forward more employment opportunities after the downturn in the resources sector and the closure of Queensland Nickel’s Yabulu refinery.

“There is no denying that times have been tough in North Queensland, with our region facing challenges around unemployment and uncertainty,” Minister O’Rourke said.

“However, our Government understands the enormous potential of North Queensland, and we are dedicated to ensuring that full potential is reached,” she said.

“That is why we have identified $367 million in shovel-ready projects across the north, to accelerate more than 800 regional jobs in North Queensland.

“This includes $210 million for projects in Townsville that will support more than 480 jobs.

“I’m pleased to say a number of these projects are now underway, and have been awarded to local contractors.

“The contract to replace the Arnot Creek Bridge on the Bruce Highway north of Ingham has been awarded to BMD Group, with construction now underway. This important project will support 31 local jobs.

“Construction on overtaking lanes between Alligator Creek Road and Allendale Drive on the Bruce Highway is also underway and being undertaken by local contractor FKG Group, supporting around 29 jobs.

“Two accelerated works projects at the Port of Townsville have also been awarded to local contractors, with the $55 million Berth 4 upgrade contract going to CivilPlus, and the $1.9 million Berth 8/9 project awarded to Bluewater Process Engineering, supporting a combined 115 jobs.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s Accelerated Works Program is supporting local jobs by bringing forward investment and economic opportunities when we need them most.”
