The Honourable Curtis Pitt

Treasurer Curtis Pitt has announced new members of the board of the state’s independent economic regulator, the Queensland Competition Authority.

Mr Pitt said Dr Flavio Menezes had been appointed as the QCA’s Deputy Chairperson and Ms Madeline Brennan QC had been appointed as a Board Member.

Mr Pitt said both had been appointed for a three-year term and would join QCA Chair, Professor Roy Green, who was appointed in June 2015 for a three-year term.

Dr Menezes is a leading Queensland economist, currently a Professor of Economics at the University of Queensland, and is widely published in the area of competition and economic regulation.

He specialises in the fields of market design and auction theory, incentives, regulation and competition.

Ms Brennan has extensive legal and commercial experience specialising in the areas of taxation and revenue law, administrative law, and competition and consumer law.

She has been involved in significant judicial review matters and in complex taxation and revenue litigation in the federal and state jurisdictions and has represented the ACCC in numerous consumer protections cases.

“The appointment of these new board members will ensure the QCA continues to effectively promote competition as the basis for enhancing efficiency and growth in the Queensland economy,” Mr Pitt said.

The new members replace current Deputy Chair, Dr David Watson, who has served on the QCA Board since 2009 and Dr Sally Pitkin, a board member since 2008, whose terms have expired.

“I thank Dr Watson and Dr Pitkin for the service they have given to our state through their dedicated work on a range of complex issues as members of the QCA Board,”

Mr Pitt said.
