It is one of Brisbane’s oldest and most intriguing localities – Petrie Terrace.

The haunt of larrikins in the 1870s, known for its rowdyism by the 1890s—the pubs, halls and theatres of the inner-city suburb have long been popular venues for music and entertainment.

By the 1970s, stately terraces had become share houses; musicians and artists were living in rickety tin and timber cottages.

Today (16 April), Minister for Heritage Protection, Dr Steven Miles will launch Australian Heritage Week at a sold out event at Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall on Petrie Terrace.

“This is a very special and unique week where all Australians have the opportunity to come together to celebrate our shared and special heritage,” Dr Miles said.

“Today we are coming together at Petrie Terrace to celebrate our city’s music and pop culture heritage.

“Events like these allow us to connect with a younger generation to help them better understand our heritage and the importance of keeping these places alive.

“I love to see heritage places being adapted and opened up to the community so they become living, breathing buildings essential to our city.

“Brisbane is embracing the worldwide trend to turn heritage places into clubs, restaurants and bars—with newbies such as The Triffid, the Gresham Bar, and Jamie Oliver’s restaurant in the heritage-listed Rowes Arcade—along with old favourites such as the Regatta, the Wickham, the Breakie Creek and the Exchange, which are all heritage-listed hotels.”

Dr Miles said the heritage-listed 1880s Baroona Labor Hall (now the home of Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall) played an important role for a new and exciting music emerging out of Brisbane such as The Saints and The Go-Betweens.

Australian Heritage Week will run from Saturday 16 April untilSunday 24 April.
