Eligible refugees who have demonstrated an intention to work and/or study in regional Australia can apply for a regional settlement visa in Queensland following the Palaszczuk Government’s announcement it will participate in the Federal Government’s Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) scheme.

The SHEV scheme is designed for people considered by the Australian Government to have arrived illegally – but who qualify for protection and have demonstrated an intention to work and/or study in regional Australia.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace said she was proud to be part of a government that valued the contribution of its multicultural and migrant societies.

“This scheme represents a visa option for eligible refugees to progress towards permanent residency in Australia,” she said.

“Individual visa holders will be able to make their own decisions about where their opportunities are greatest and with many parts of regional Queensland crying out for more workers, this scheme is a win-win for all parties.

“By opting in to the scheme, more people may be attracted to Queensland communities where they can seek out job opportunities, contribute their skills and build a new life.”

SHEV visa holders who have worked or studied in designated regional postcodes for 42 out of 60 months and have not accessed income support for more than 18 months, will be able to apply for other onshore permanent visas.

“We are committed to ensuring that Queensland communities are welcoming and inclusive,” Ms Grace said.

“Queenslanders of all backgrounds have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the economic, social and cultural fabric of our great state.

“Enabling eligible people to seek opportunities through the SHEV scheme reflects our desire to assist refugees living in, or settling in Queensland.”
