Statement from the Industrial Relations Minister: Yabulu Nickel Refinery

On Thursday 10 March, the administrators for the Yabulu Nickel Refinery requested the transfer of the major hazard facility licence from the current operator Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd to proposed operator Queensland Nickel Sales Ltd.

To progress the transfer of the licence, QNS was first asked via email on 9 March 2016 to supply information to assure Workplace Health and Safety Queensland that it can maintain appropriate levels of safety at the refinery.

WHSQ made further contact with QNS today (Friday 12) to again request that this information is supplied.

Once the required information is provided to WHSQ, the application to transfer the licence can be completed in 24 hours.

The licence transfer process is not an impediment to rehiring the 550 staff at the refinery.

Safety at the refinery is paramount and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland continues to monitor activities at the site closely.
