Brisbane theatre’s finest honoured at Matilda Awards

Logie Award-winning actress and director Carol Burns has been posthumously awarded a Gold Matilda, Brisbane theatre’s highest honour.

Multicultural Affairs Minister and Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace - representing Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk - applauded the late theatrical legend at a gala event in Brisbane tonight.

“The late Carol Burns is a legend of Queensland and Australian theatre and a proud advertisement for Brisbane’s thriving arts scene,” she said.

“Born in Brisbane, she amassed a lifetime of achievement locally and internationally, winning great acclaim also for her work in the UK.

“Her career culminated in a final outstanding performance last year in Queensland Theatre Company’s Happy Days.

“It was a fitting finale to a glittering international career which spanned theatre, film and television.”

Ms Grace also congratulated the other winners of tonight’s Matilda Awards.

“The Matilda Awards celebrate Queensland’s dynamic performing arts scene and our many talented artists and performing arts companies,” she said.

“As the Member for Brisbane Central, I’m very proud of the range of excellent theatre productions that are presented locally.

“The quality of the productions that are presented throughout the State each year show that Queensland’s theatre industry is in great shape.

“I want to congratulate all the talented theatre artists and practitioners who contribute to Queensland’s world class arts scene.”
