New disaster group trial to build safer Far North communities

The Palaszczuk Government has moved to streamline disaster management operations in Far North Queensland with a trial merger of the two disaster groups that already serve the region.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne said the existing Cairns and Mareeba District Disaster Management Groups (DDMG) would amalgamate to form the Far North District DDMG as a single coordination point for government during emergencies.

“Far North Queensland has more than its fair share of cyclones and floods – that’s why it is really important that we have the right mechanisms in place to ensure our police, fire and emergency services can respond rapidly in the event of natural disaster,’ Minister Byrne said.

“At the moment, the Cairns and Mareeba districts operate separate disaster management groups even though they are located fairly close to each other and are often impacted by the same disasters at the same time.

“As well, both of the groups have many of the same local government, state government and non-government representation, so it makes sense to cut out the duplication.”

Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius said the trial was designed to enhance the already-existing disaster management operations in the far north.

“The QPS is committed to building safer and most-resilient communities and this trial is just one way we’re doing that,’ Acting Assistant Commissioner Schafferius said.

“We are confident that the trial will enhance our disaster management operations through a greater strategic coordination at the District level.

“The merged group will also create a single point of coordination for disasters affecting the Mareeba and Cairns communities and will increase efficiencies such as better central support to local disaster management groups.”

Following extensive consultation, a trial merger of the two District Disaster Management Groups would commence from March 1 and run for a year.

The Far North District Officer will be the Chair and Disaster Coordinator during the trial.
