Building Ministers must act on non-conforming products

Ahead of the Building Ministers Forum on the Gold Coast this Friday, Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said Queensland will join interstate colleagues to discuss strategies to address the issue of non-conforming building products

“The Palaszczuk Government recognises the issue of non-conforming and non-compliant building products is an important and complex matter of national significance,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I’ve been made aware that the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) has conducted an audit of high rise residential and public buildings.

“These findings confirm the Queensland Government’s decision to take a leadership role in the development of strategies to respond to this issue.

“The Building Ministers’ Forum - a forum of Commonwealth, state and territory building Ministers – will be considering these matters when it convenes on the Gold Coast this Friday.

“We already have checks and balances in place to manage non-conforming building products through our building certification process here in Queensland.

“I am committed to improving the existing measures in Queensland if warranted.

“I encourage builders to avoid the risk of using non-conforming building products, by looking to Australian made manufacturers delivering products to Australian standards.

“We will then see flow on effects that include the creation of more jobs for Australian workers.”
