The North Queensland Return to Work Conference returns to Townsville in April, bringing expert insights and professional development to rehabilitation and return to work coordinators in North Queensland.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the conference would be held on Friday 29 April at the Ville Resort, Townsville.

“The Return to Work Conference will provide insights, information and skills to help influence meaningful change in return to work practices in workplaces across the state,” she said.

“It’s aimed at assisting businesses, families and communities through every stage of the rehabilitation process.”

Ms Grace said in Queensland, more than 4,000 people would be permanently injured at work this year.

“This highlights the need for both employers and injured workers to focus on positive worker capabilities,” she said.

“The best results are achieved when employers embrace employment practices that encourage workers to recover at work, resulting in a win win outcome.”

Ms Grace said returning to work not only assisted with recovery, but also allowed businesses to continue to operate efficiently and productively.

“Workers away from work for 20 days have a 70 per cent chance of returning to work, but someone off work for 70 days has only a 35 per cent chance of ever returning to work,” she said.

“Acting quickly, from the first meeting between patient and doctor, is therefore vital for the recovery of the injured worker.

“Workplace injuries in Queensland come with a $6 billion annual price tag, which is why it’s so important for employers to invest in good return to work and safety practices.”
