Nerang–Broadbeach Road widening near Bermuda Street

Early works started this week on Nerang–Broadbeach Road to add a third lane westbound between Rio Vista and Lakeview boulevards in Mermaid Waters.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey visited the site this morning and said the $1.5 million project was part of the $160.7 million Commonwealth Games Roads package to cater for current and expected future traffic volumes on the Gold Coast.

“The upgrade involves expanding the road by adding a third westbound lane, resurfacing and implementing new linemarking to help improve traffic flows and increase safety on this busy stretch of Nerang–Broadbeach Road,” Mr Bailey said.

“Access for pedestrians and cyclists will also be improved with a signalised pedestrian crossing installed at the Manapouri Street intersection and extending the existing shared cyclist and pedestrian path on the southern side to Bermuda Street.

Mr Bailey said Nerang–Broadbeach Road would be used as a core route for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“There are several road infrastructure upgrades to be completed under the $160.7 million package that all will provide long-term benefits to the Gold Coast community,” Mr Bailey said.

“These roads projects will provide around 480 jobs at a time when jobs and job security are more important than ever.

“Plans for safety and capacity improvements to the Gooding Drive roundabout on Nerang–Broadbeach Road worth $5.7 are also being finalised as part of the Commonwealth Games roads package.

“A total of seven direct jobs will be created between both projects along Nerang–Broadbeach Road which is great for local workers in road construction and related industries.

“A work site has also been established on Southport–Burleigh Road in preparation for construction of an additional north and southbound lane from Fremar Street to Rudd Street in Broadbeach Waters as part of the $104 million upgrade to Southport–Burleigh Road.”

The roads package is part of $10 billion in infrastructure funding to support 27,000 jobs in the Queensland budget.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to delivering a safe and reliable road network, and getting on with job of building Gold Coast roads for the future,” he said.

Mr Bailey said with roadworks happening all across the Gold Coast, motorists are being urged to show patience, allow additional travel time and use alternative routes when possible.

“The bus stop and shelter near Lakeview Boulevard will be relocated further west in mid-March so public transport users should keep an eye out for signage leading up to that change,” he said.

“Moggill Constructions are carrying out the works which are expected to be completed in the next four months.”
