The Honourable Steven Miles

Stop work notices at three residential buildings at Highgate Hill, Brisbane have been replaced by compliance officers after they were removed overnight.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Dr Steven Miles was joined by the Deputy Premier and Member for South Brisbane Jackie Trad this morning at the site in Highgate Hill.

Minister Miles said the future of the buildings was now in the hands of the Queensland Heritage Council, which would be considering the matter at its meeting on 6 May 2016.

“Compliance officers from EHP have been in contact with the developers and are satisfied that the stop work orders will be adhered to,” Dr Miles said.

“The situation will be monitored as a matter of course during this breathing space to enable the heritage value of these properties to be properly considered.”

Dr Miles said the community would have the opportunity to make submissions to the Queensland Heritage Council as part of that process.

“It’s important that the concerns raised by the community about the future of these buildings are addressed and that’s why as Heritage Minister I have taken the step of issuing a stop work order,” he said.

The same developers are currently removing asbestos from a fourth property at 8 Colton Street which is not the subject of a stop work notice.

The maximum penalty for contravening a stop order is:

  • For an individual 17,000 penalty units  totalling  $2,002,600
  • For a corporation 85,000  penalty units totalling  $10,013,000.
